What’s up at The Wharf

April 4, 2018

There are loads of free events and activities happening nearby your affordable one-bedroom apartment this spring!

One of the best things about living at a ROSS affordable one-bedroom apartment is the accessibility. You can find great restaurants, fun daytime destinations and more, right near your neighborhood. But, some things are worth going out of the way for. The Wharf is one of those places and this spring it has a ton of free events and outdoor activities that will make your day. Read on for Wharf events that are less than 20 minutes away from your affordable one-bedroom apartment!

Free Events

April 7 | 1:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. | Fireworks at 8:30 p.m. (weather permitting)

This is truly an all-day outing. The Wharf will be making its debut as the location for Petalpalooza. The event, which used to be known as the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, does include an amazing fireworks show to cap off the evening. However, there are plenty of other activities during the daytime! Life-size, interactive art installations, a full eight hours of live music, a roller rink and various other entertainments will fill The Wharf with life.

American Odyssey Relay Race

April 28 | 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

This event is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, which means the finish line at The Wharf will be packed with onlookers. Food and beer will be served, along with live music as the winners cross the finish line.

Running of the Chihuahuas

May 5 | 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

This Cinco de Mayo “tradition” is equal parts adorable and exciting! In addition to the Chihuahua race, there will be a pet costume contest and mini-golf. You can relax and take a moment in the shade at the Waterfront Beer & Wine Garden set up for the occasion. Bring your own furry friend along for a full day of fun.

Outdoor Activities

Roll Through Town

Capital Bikeshare is a great way to get around Washington, DC. And, you can actually travel all the way from your affordable one-bedroom apartment at The Heritage at Old Town to The Wharf using this service! Take a look at the Capital Bikeshare map and you’ll see several ways to go. We recommend taking the trip in three segments. You can start at whichever Capital Bikeshare is most convenient for you to get to from your affordable one-bedroom apartment, because there are several in downtown Alexandria. From there, bike 20 minutes north along the waterfront to the Potomac Ave & 35th St S. station (#31052).

Another 20 minutes will bring you to the Hains Point/Buckeye & Ohio Dr SW. Station (#31273) and its corresponding view over the gorgeous Potomac River. End your trip at the 4th & M St SW Station (#31108), which is only another 10 minutes. This route can take you from your affordable one-bedroom apartment to The Wharf in less than an hour. But, the entire journey travels through tree-lined sidewalks and over beautiful water features, so consider taking your time.

Eat Your Heart Out

Food trucks are big in the district and no wonder. They’re convenient, affordable and delicious. If you’re coming into DC from Grandview Apartments, you should consider stopping at the National Mall for a bite. The Fajitas Factory is Yelp’s top-rated food truck on the mall. These guys specialize in “fajita subs”. No, really: fajita subs! And people go nuts over them!

For something a little more traditional, you can walk over to the second most loved Washington food truck: Basil Thyme. Customers are heads over heels for their lasagnas, roasted meats and salads. Altogether, it’s a delectable, balanced meal.

El Fuego is next. This truck focuses on authentic Peruvian cuisine. The highest reviews come from the pan con chicharron, lomo saltado bowl and the deep-fried veggie. Lilypad on the Run adds serious variety to your options, offering Ethiopian food on the go. Last, but not least, Kabob Square boasts yet another cuisine. No surprise, the gyros are the top choice for these customers.

Take a Walk

Whether you’re coming south from the mall or east from Potomac Park, a walk through the city can be totally relaxing. With the whole evening ahead of you and nowhere else to be, spend a few blocks pondering the spring sunset.

At the end of a long day at The Wharf, you’ll love going home to your affordable one-bedroom apartment.
