Five Must-Do’s for the Spring Season

April 17, 2018

These venues near your Hyattsville apartment are hosting the best music, art and poetry this month.

If you ever wanted to know what it would be like to move into that artsy flat, chat with poets over breakfast and spend the evenings enjoying the best of live, local music, then look no further. A ROSS Hyattsville apartment near the heart of the Arts District Hyattsville is no longer just for eccentrics. It’s totally accessible. And spring is the best season for it. Restaurants and creative venues alike are prepping for summer, putting out the patio chairs and opening the windows. Here’s what they’re up to this month…

  1. Busboys and Poets

As it has been since 1996, April is National Poetry Month and, no surprise, BB&P is taking it seriously. Open mic nights are being held every Thursday night of the month. This Thursday, April 12, it will be hosted by the captivating 2Deep, a compelling, political poet who’s performed all over the world. Rebecca Dupas, the founder of an event-based poetry company, will host the April 19event. And renowned DC poet E-Baby will host on April 16.

In addition to the poetry open mics above, BB&P will be hosting the annual student arts and craft show on April 18 and a live talent show on April 20, which will be MC’d by soulful guitarist Angie “A.J.” Head. Lastly, the musical “Ladies in the Day” will premiere at BB&P on May 13 at 6 p.m., with a second show at 8 p.m. Keep in mind that BB&P is only 10 minutes from ROSS’ Overlook Apartments in Hyattsville.

  1. Pyramid Atlantic Art Center

April 20 is opening day for “Southern Fried Woodcuts” by contemporary American “outlaw” printmaker, Sean Starwars. Don’t miss your chance to get a slick t-shirt from his shop or bring back a brightly colored print for your Hyattsville apartment.

  1. Galaxy Night Club

This spot is known for its great music and for being well-run (plus its bangin’ salsa). Come out on April 13 to see 24 Horas, Xtreme and Alex Bueno. Keep in mind, this is definitely an adults-only activity!

  1. Trinity Grill & Bar

If you’d rather make your own art than view someone else’s, these events are for you! On April 15 there will be a Sip n’ Paint brunch. And on April 21 there’s a Sip n’ Paint afternoon, where you can create a multicolored painting of a succulent to decorate your Hyattsville apartment. Both of these events are sponsored by Wonderfully Made4You.

  1. Magruder Park

For kids and families, the Hyattsville City Anniversary Parade and Carnival are perfect! The Carnival runs from Thursday, April 12, through Sunday, April 15, at Magruder Park. The Parade will take place on April 14 and start at 11a.m. at the Hyattsville Middle School.

BONUS: For younger kids, the Rise + Rhyme events at Busboys and Poets are great, too! They take place every Monday from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Downtown Restaurants

While you’re out of your Hyattsville apartment, you should try one of these hidden gems. The Carolina Kitchen specializes in Southern cuisine, with menu staples like jerk wings, baby back ribs, and grilled salmon. Spice 6 is an up-and-coming modern Indian chain. And the Shagga Restaurant offers truly delicious, traditional Ethiopian fare.

There are so many ways to enjoy the Arts District Hyattsville. And when you live at the Bedford Station Apartments/Victoria Station Apartments or the Overlook Apartments in Hyattsville, it’s easy to pop into town for spring events and restaurant dates. There’s never been a better reason to tour a Hyattsville apartment by ROSS today.
