Check out these awesome outdoor spring and summer concerts that are just a short drive from your Alexandria apartment!
Listening to live music under the setting sun is one of the best feelings that come with summer. But, there’s no need to wait until July rolls around. There are great outdoor performances running in DC from May, all the way through the end of August. Check out our list below to see what favorites will be near your Alexandria apartment!
Jazz in the Garden
Every Friday | May 18 through August 24 | 5:00 – 8:30 p.m.
This event is hosted at the National Gallery of Art Pavilion Café. This year’s lineup includes The JoGo Project, the Michael Thomas Quintet, Black Masala, Incendio, Son Del Caribe and Andrea Brachfeld. Follow the link in the title for the full schedule.
DC Jazz Festival
June 8 – 17 | 6:30 p.m.
This event has been around since 2005, and offers a huge variety of music. It will be hosted at Yards Park. Headliners include Leslie Odom Jr., Chucho Valdés & Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and R+R=NOW. A total of over 40 artists will perform.
The name of Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts sort of gives away its purpose. The venue has a totally packed spring and summer schedule, full of enriching music, arts and other performances. Out of the ordinary events for the season include “Motown the Musical” in June, “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – In Concert” during July, and “Bollywood Boulevard” in August. Kingman Island Blue Grass & Folk Festival
June 9 | All Day
This event takes place on a large island in the middle of the Anacostia River. Listen to classic and up-and-coming blue grass and folk singers against the scenic background of Kingman and Heritage Islands Park. Headliners include Gangstagrass, The American Songster Review and Dori Freeman. See the full list of artists here.
Thursday Evenings | 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. | Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
This summer concert series takes place against the backdrop of the National Arboretum’s beautiful grounds. These are dry events with no pets allowed, which makes them the perfect peaceful getaway from an Alexandria apartment in the city. All concerts are free but you must register in advance to receive tickets.
Jiffy Lube Live
June to August | Most events start between 7:00 – 7:30 p.m.
This venue is a 50-minute drive from the Heritage at Old Town and an hour from Park Vue. Jiffy Lube Live is hosting some of the biggest names in music this spring and summer. In June, you can see Kendrick Lamar, Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Chesney and Old Dominion, Foreigner and Imagine Dragons.
In July, there’s Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steely Dan and the Doobie Brothers, Chris Brown, Styx and Joan Jett, Arcade Fire, Weezer, and Kesha and Macklemore (performing together). Lastly, August will bring Jimmy Buffett, Keith Urban, Pentatonix, and G-Eazy to the venue.
Merriweather Post Pavilion
May to August | Most events start at 7:30pm, with doors opening 1.5 hours early
The Pavilion is an hour drive from both of ROSS’ Alexandria apartments. This venue hosts more festivals and concert series than individual artists. In May, the M3 Rock Festival will be there, as will the Capital Jazz Fest. Country artists like Luke Bryan and the Florida Georgia Line will play, as will big names like Robert Plant & the Sensational Space Shifters, Ray Lamontagne, and Paramore.
June at the Pavilion this year will mean Sugarland, Dispatch, David Byrne, and the Vans Warped Tour. In July, big names include Jason Mraz, Phish, CAKE & Ben Folds, and Kenny Chesney.
