May 3, 2019
When you choose to live at a ROSS apartment near Metro, chances are your home is just beyond the city limits of our nation’s capital.
Within minutes, you can be walking down the National Mall, participating in cultural festivals or experiencing the eclectic food culture. This lifestyle is perfect for people who want the lively city experience, while also having the option to retreat into the comforts of home at the end of each day. That’s why we’ve come up with a few activities to inspire your Washington, DC city experience.
Find your Destination
When in Washington, a must-see is the National Mall. Spanning from the U.S. Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, this two mile park is sprinkled with monuments, memorials, and museums. Did you know that 11 of the 19 Smithsonian Museums are located on the National Mall? Although we recommend taking your time to experience the wealth of knowledge found in each museum, you could technically visit all 11 in one day!
If the National Mall is the destination for you, make sure you hop off the Metro at one of these five stations: Federal Triangle, Smithsonian, L’Enfant Plaza, Federal Center SW, Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter.
One of the greatest characteristics of Washington, DC is the large presence of cultural diversity. Due in part to foreign embassies and international organizations being found throughout the city, there’s never a shortage of fun cultural events to attend. A couple of the events going on in May are Mercado DC and the Fiesta Asia Street Fair.
On May 12, Mercado DC will feature a diverse mix of Latin American and Spanish street food vendors serving you unique dishes accompanied with lively music. The following weekend is the Fiesta Asia Street Fair, showcasing over 1,000 performers who represent 20 cultures and will give live performances across multiple stages.
Regardless of the festivals you attend, there are Metro stops sprinkled all across the city making them convenient to get to from your ROSS apartment near Metro.
International Food Fare
Given the cultural vibrancy of Washington, there are many restaurants and cafés that reflect the tastes of the city’s community at large. Each neighborhood is dotted with award-winning restaurants, hipster hot-spots and local community favorites. The most notable neighborhoods known for their eclectic mix of delicious dishes are Georgetown, Adams Morgan and Shaw.
The next time you crave Italian food, make your way down to Fiola Mare at the Georgetown waterfront to sip on a fine Italian wine while looking out onto the sparkling water. If you’re looking for an intimate setting, then we recommend dinner at Lapis, an Afghani restaurant in Adams Morgan. Or, try something with a modern twist at Kyirisan, a restaurant in Shaw that combines Asian flavors with French flair.
If any of these restaurants pique your interest, then Foggy Bottom-GWU station, Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams Morgan station, or Shaw Howard University station are your stops.
