Annual Ginger Bread House Contest

This adorable and tasty annual event supports a good cause. All funds go to Carpenter’s Shelter right here in Alexandria, VA. Donations of any size are accepted. Sign up to participate in teams or simply come and watch! Ten teams will compete for the grand prize. Voting will take place via social media and the polls close on December 14 at 5 p.m. Be sure to support your favorite gingerbread creation by liking it! Complimentary food and wine will be available for participants.

The Theater and the Arts

The Alexandria Singers will be performing “Believe: Our Holiday Pops Concert” on December 7 and 8. The lineup will include both pop and jazz elements, combining holiday classics with more modern melodies. Or you can head to The Lyceum where performers dressed in colonial garb will be performing the Colonial Handbell Ringers Concert on December 16.

Lights at Night  

Above and beyond the twinkling displays of King Street, there are glittering demonstrations all over Alexandria. Explore Mount Vernon by Candlelight on December 7, 8, or 16 to learn about seasonal traditions at the historical estate. Or learn about the entire town’s past with the Alexandria Historic Candlelight Tour on December 8. Last but not least, you can head into Northwest DC for the always popular Zoo Lights! Any day between now and January 1 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., you can explore the National Zoo under light-up displays and flashing icicle lights.
